Halloween 2008

Well it was lots of fun and over pretty quick!  Jackson had a fever for the past couple days and he got well, just in time for Halloween.  The weather was awesome.  I didn't get an opportunity to photograph many of the kids on the street, but I was able to get some fun shots for the archives.  All in all, Jackson was in a great mood and he received a lot of candy for being the cutest skunk on the street!

Monkey business

It's hard to believe that this image was taken a year ago!  Jackson was a monkey then and still is-lol.  We just finished carving our pumpkin's for tomorrow.  We got grandparents visiting and we'll be baking and handing out treats for all the boys and girls.  I got all the camera gear ready for our street shoot...I'll post pix soon!

Costume?

I'm not really sure if this was a Halloween costume.  This guy was walking around Bloor St. in Toronto and I couldn't resist taking some paparazzi shots of him.  You can tell that a lot of hours was invested in the design of his costume.  I'd like to know who the designer was.  Poor guy looked a little lost...I sure hope he finds the Halloween party that he is looking for...

The passion still burns

I was on my way home this morning from a 12-hour night shift of highway maintenance.  As I drove up my street admiring the sky and looking forward to some sleep, I suddenly looked to the East and remembered how cool the hydro poles looked, all lined up along the field of dense trees, surrounded by nature.  I immediately pulled a u-turn and said to myself...keep them eye's open just a wee bit longer Joey!  It's times like this where the passion still burns inside of me.  So I anxiously pulled up along the curb, turned on the 4-ways on and busted out my Gitzo tripod and grab hold of my Nikon D3.  I like what I'm seeing and thought it's about time I pull some local scene shots for my landscape photography collection.  So I made sure I geared to the lowest ISO setting on my camera and basically relived my Fuji Velvia 50 days...I was really into it.  And the cold morning weather with the windchill was very unfriendly.  You get tired when your waiting on 30 second exposures and your hands are freezing.  I pretty much knew what I wanted on this mission, I was moving fast...before the sky got brighter and all the local kids got on the school bus.  I've posted 3 images that have not been edited.  These will all be cleaned up in Capture NX and runned through Photomatix for my final high dynamic range(HDR) image.  Keep checking back, as I plan to post the final image once all the stages are complete.  I'm hoping to get a nice shot out of the whole deal.  My only concern is that the sky was moving and 30 second exposures may trump my HDR dreams!  Please note that I have little experience with HDR and that I want this to be a learning experience for everyone.

What is HDR?
According to Wikipedia.  In image processing, computer graphics, and photography, high dynamic range imaging(HDR) is a set of techniques that allows a greater dynamic range of exposures(the range of values between light and dark areas) than normal digital imaging techniques.  The intention of HDR is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to shadows.

Special thanks to Doug and Pat, who opened my eyes a couple years ago on HDR.  I'll be sure to post Pat's killer HDR image that he took in Cuba....YOU HAVE TO SEE IT!

Junior vs. Senior

IMAGE VIA STROBIST

Well lots of hype lately on the new Nikon SB-900 Speedlights and it appears that many people will flock to Ebay or Craigslist for some used SB-800's. My take is simple, save your money for now...with all the economic melting going on lately, I suggest shopping around for deals on a few 800's. The extra chutzpah on the 900's is nice, but I just can't justify the cost when the 800's work well and are nice and compact. Of course bigger is better...but let's be fair. Give the consumers a break on the price instead of moving forward with the little improvements. Don't get me wrong, I'm very moved by the Nikon speedlights, as many are. But just imagine, Nikon introducing a value pack on Speedlights...perhaps introducing 2 packs, 4 packs or even 6 packs!!! Or buy one and get the second for half price?...just in time for Christmakah!

Ashton Kutcher loves his Nikon Coolpix!

So it appears that Nikon has found an ambassador who is adored by many. Yes, Ashton Kutcher, Hollywood's A-list actor and producer, is lending his photogenic qualities to Nikon to promote the manufacturer's new COOLPIX Style series cameras. The campaign has been running nationally since March 25th with a television commercial, which precedes the print advertisements and an interactive online component. Taking place in trendy locales such as boutique hotels and upscale shopping destinations, the campaign highlights the exquisite styling, fashionable colors, simplicity and great performance of Nikon's Style series compact digital cameras.
I remember working a film festival and we were chasing Demi Moore and we happened to bump into Ashton on the streets and he would mimick the paparazzi and photograph people who took photographs of him, for fun of course! Check out the link; http://www.ashtonscoolpix.com/ I think I'm going to have to get my Wife the new Nikon COOLPIX S60 for the holiday's...the little monster packs 10 megapixels and has an amazing touch-screen that morphs from vertical to horizontal, similar to Apple's iphone screen!

Wild Fox

I was on a job with The Miller Group yesterday and discovered a wild fox sleeping inside one of their sand domes at the Miller Maintenance division in Pickering.  This fox seemed pretty photogenic and he didn't mind me directing him outside for some portraits.  After the photo session, the fox casually walked into another dome to continue with his afternoon nap.  He has asked me to refrain from taking anymore photos.
This was my first ever encounter with a fox and I was able to work on my knees and maintain a 10-12 foot shooting distance.  I would clap against my thigh to grab his attention.  I strongly advise in taking extra caution when photographing wild animals, you just never know!

Equipment/Techniques:
I used the AF-S VR Nikkor 70-200mm telephoto lens from Nikon...and utilized the VR(vibration reduction) feature to maintain a crisp image.  For the indoor image, my white balance setting was set at 'automatic', shutter speed was 1/100 and the aperature was 2.8.  I also bumped my ISO to 1600 so that I could sustain a higher shutter speed to keep the image even sharper.  The outdoor shot was easier because I could rely on the ambient lighting, so I left the white balance on 'automatic', reduced my ISO to 400 and metered accordingly to shoot a shutter speed of 1/800 at f5.6.

Picking Pumpkins at Pingles

Hampton, Ontario
Well Jackson has been busy and I haven't made many posts on him lately.  However over the weekend we grabbed our pumpkins for Halloween, saw some cool animals, jumped off some bales of hay, played in the corn maze...daddy got lost!  And we also got to see Walter Pingle fire some pumpkins from his cannon.  All in all it was a fun time with the family.

Congratulations Devann & Simon

It was an amazing wedding, we had a lot of fun and I felt like I was family.  The Church lighting was challenging and we got lucky with Parkwood, considering all the rain.  Everything worked out well in the end and we captured some memories.  I wish you both the best that life has to offer!

Renee's Wedding

Well it was a blur!  I had a lot to shoot, the atmosphere was really inviting and I blended in with everyone, while trying to capture as many moments as possible...that's what it's about-right?  As I photographed another exciting wedding, I gave it all my might.  Knowing it was my last wedding of the year, I forgot how early it got dark around this time of the year!  The harvest time is a wonderful part of the Autumn season, it's that warmth in the Sun...the nice orange and red colours in the tree's that ignite the day with fire.  I pulled some images from yesterday's wedding, just to look back!  The day moved fast and here's what I remember; we had the paparazzi there-haha, a lovely baby, a humorous group of groomsmen and some cheerful bride's maides who had some colourful toe nails on display.  All in all, it was a fun filled afternoon in Sharon, Ontario.

NIKON PHOTO CONTEST...HURRY-STILL TIME LEFT!

Well it's been a tough selection process for me, but the 4 images above(2 for each category) will be entered in the 2008-2009 Nikon Photo Contest International. This is my second attempt, so I'm hoping to gain some exposure. "Wish me luck!"
The Nikon Photo Contest International has been held by Nikon Corporation since 1969 to provide an opportunity for photographers around the world to communicate and to enrich photographic culture for professionals and amateurs alike. "At the heart of the image" is not only the brand statement of Nikon Imaging Company, but it is also the theme for the 32nd contest, in which entries are invited in two categories. The first category is "Free subject" where images convey the photographer's unique perspective and creativity . And the second category is "My Planet" which display images that express your feelings about your world, whether that involves the environment, scenes from your daily life, or people and other things that stir your passions. Entries to each category are accepted as prints sent by conventional mail or as JPEG images sent via the Internet. An exhibition of the winning photographs is also planned(details concerning the specific date and location will be announced in the future). With this theme and these categories, Nikon is looking forward to receiving expressive images from around the world that are true to people's emotions. For more information regarding this annual event, visit http://www.nikon-npci.com
Entries received via the Internet will be accepted until 24:00, November 30th, 2008, Japan time.

Vivid Colour!

I was around when this local fire took place last Summer.  I tweaked the colours in Photoshop and decided that it was an interesting photojournalistic shot for a posting.  Composition is yet again involved...the house is to the right and the fire sprinklers are being blasted from the left side...hope you all like!

Canadian Forces Photographer Dies

Courtesy of CTV.ca
Canadian officials have released the names of a pilot and military photographer who died while photographing a jet formation near the Snowbird base in Saskatchewan Thursday.
Capt. Bryan Mitchell, 46, and photographer Sgt. Charles Senecal, 49, both perished when their CT-114 Tutor aircraft crashed about two kilometres northwest of Canadian Forces Base Moose Jaw.
The Tutor aircraft, which is used exclusively by the Snowbird Squadron, crashed slightly after 12:30 p.m. MT.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Capt. Mitchell and Sgt. Senecal," said Col. Paul Keddy, commander of Moose Jaw's 15 Wing base, on Friday.
Keddy said that Mitchell had been chosen to fly with the Snowbirds during their next show season, which was "truly a dream come true for him."
Keddy added that Mitchell will be remembered as an "inspiring" flight instructor and a passionate airman.
Senecal, who had been a Canadian Forces photographer for about 30 years, was a joyful man who "could be counted on," said Keddy.
"His 'joie de vivre' was contagious and made a difference in the lives of people around him."
Just before the crash, the pair had been following a formation of three other jets for a routine photo session, according to officials.
The military has launched a preliminary investigation into what caused the fatal crash, and more investigators were expected to arrive at the site Friday, Keddy said.
Meanwhile, the Snowbirds were considering whether they should cancel a weekend show in California.
Questions about aging jets
According to the Department of National Defence website, the single-engine Tutor jet is only used by the Canadian Forces Snowbird squadron.
The Tutor, first used in 1963, was retired as a training jet in 2000.
National Defence was urged four years ago to replace the jets. A study by the department's director of major service delivery warned that the jets' life expectancy was 2010.
Eight people have died in Snowbirds' crashes since 1972.
In 2004, Capt. Miles Selby, a member of the famed Snowbirds squadron, was killed in a collision with another plane.
The most recent fatal accident happened at an air show in Montana in 2007, when Capt. Shawn McCaughey was killed.

Klong Toey slum in Bangkok

Toronto-Hong Kong photographer, Ian Taylor was on a return assignment at the Mercy Centre in the Klong Toey slum of Bangkok. I posted this amazing photograph because it promotes photojournalism, the kind we see in Time or National Geographic magazines. This photograph simply tells a story!

Composition

TORONTO
I've said it before and I will continue to reiterate that composition is almost everything!  I was accredited to shoot this event for a local paper, a long with some other media outlets.  All of us were unable to utilize flash and therefore I had no choice but to push-process my Fuji slide film(ISO 400 - ISO 800) by one full stop and work my aperature wide open at 2.8!

If you get the privilege to work at such an exciting event such as Cirque Du Soleil, you can capture some amazing images.  In this photo I barely froze the subject as she was moving very sporadically and with the amount of low light in the tent, things were very limited to press photographers.  At any given time, you have to respect the level of talent at such events, therefore the 'no-flash' policy is something that you take seriously.

Shadows

I like shooting shadows every now and then. They are another form of being expressive with photography. You could create a theme on shadows and explore various lighting techniques with shadows in many ways...try it...all you have to do is be creative! This image could also pass for a self portrait.
