HOW LENSES ARE MADE!

Since some students have been picking on my brain regarding telephoto lenses and lenses in general, I decided to post this video...it's awesome!

More Zoo

While I've been going through countless images of zoo animals, I decided to add one more.  I had to shoot through a plastic window and I only wished that I had a longer lens.  This little guy was very content with his playtime, and many of us were watching him with pleasure.  It was the light in his eyes that caught my attention...he was looking up and figuring out what his next move would be.

The local zoo is always a great place to practise photography.  I suggest it to many students who want to take their photography to the next level etc.  I also recommend renting a telephoto len's if you don't own.  The great thing with longer lenses, is that you get more substance out of the entire experience.  You can shoot tight framed or wide for more photojournalistic style images.  The Nikon 70-200 VR(Vibration Reduction) lens is an asset to any photographer!  I also want to mention that if you do use a monopod with any telephoto lenses, try and switch off the VR, as it defeats it's purpose and apparently the sensor goes nuts...I imagine you also save some battery power.  I will explain more on telephoto lenses and VR etc. in a future article that I am working on.

Going from lines to texture...

So I was playing around at the local zoo a few years back and I was banging off roles of chrome(slide film) and captured some cool photos of the animals.  In this photo I was going for a tight frame(I used my telephoto) approach, up close and personal shot.  The image is a perfect example of texture.

I recommend 'LEARNING TO SEE CREATIVELY' by Bryan Peterson...the book covers design, color and composition in photography.

Teaching Workshops

ETOBICOKE
I get the privilege in teaching digital imaging workshops at local elementary schools!  Many of the grade 7 and 8 students participate in Media programs that are implemented by the local school boards these days.  In this photo I was working at the Fairbank Middle School in Etobicoke.  Special thanks to Andrew McCurbin who took a fascination in my work and twisted my arm in educating students at his son's school.  I made a quick call to Epson Canada and worked my magic...they donated several cases of their 'Complete Guide to Digital Printing' books(approximate value $4,500).  I basically walked the students through on some digital imaging tricks and how to work effectively with programs like Adobe Elements and Photoshop.  Yes, I will be doing more workshops.  I have joined forces with Propix and I'm also trying to get more photographers to join me on this project.  Keep checking back, as I will disclose more information on my involvement with local schools!

TRAIN LINES

TORONTO
Lately I have been busy with some commercial photography, but every now and then I find some creative opportunities to play with lines.  Use your imagination and try to incorporate some lines into your images as it can be stimulating to the eye!  I also used the 'rule of thirds' with the front of the train.  I will explain further when we launch online workshops!

MILLER IN TRAINING

PICKERING, ONTARIO
I recently took these photographs for The Miller Group, who was conducting traffic control procedures for company employees.  The Miller Maintenance Ltd. division in Pickering has several training programs throughout the year, to ensure worker competency and safety.

Night Photography

THE DURHAM REGION
I have an eye for shooting things at night and you have to use your imagination to let your ideas run wild, creativity is the big element here!  I've done some work for The Miller Group, who does an incredible job at maintaining highway infastructures for the Durham Region.  It has been a very rewarding experience for me to integrate my photography skills in a new light!

SPACES

I was very lucky to participate in an assignment involving the newly renovated Royal Ontario Musuem last year.  The renovation featured a $30 million dollar architectural design by Michael Lee-Chin last year.  The opportunity to shoot one of the bigger Michael Lee-Chin Crystal rooms was priceless, as that room is now completely furnished with artifacts and will never be an open space to the public!

Icicles

NIAGRA FALLS, ONTARIO
I took this photograph about 5-6 winters ago. Everything surrounding the falls was completely covered in ice, the mist coming off was just glazing trees, light poles and rails along the walkways. This particular light pole caught my attention immediately...another fine art piece from my collection.

Nostalgic Rust

SPANISH, ONTARIO
I took this photograph outside of Spanish, Ontario many years ago. I fell in love with the lighting, the age of the car and everything just felt so organic. I remember using my Nikon F5, Kodachrome 64 and my tripod. This photograph is more fine art related and I have a gallery size print of it hanging in my office. To this day, I still receive endless inspiration everytime I look at it!

Lindsay Lohan visits Toronto

TORONTO
I originally announced that I was going to post some shots from the Toronto International Film Festival and also post a shot from a party that Lindsay Lohan was hosting. But I didn't want to over do it, as this site is still in it's early stages for it's mainstream. Essentially this site is a blog and it's about my son. Over the next few weeks I may side track a bit and expose some of my general photography, as I intend to produce an online stock photography agency. I've been doing alot of thinking and I really want to share my work and occasionally show case any work from the hard working photographers who associate themselves with Joey Images!

Special thanks to the fellow paparazzo who has authorized the use of this image on my blog.  I kicked his ass to go and chase her.  I was too tired and wanted to catch up with Wifey!

Trying to stay focused...

Miami Bust

SOUTH BEACH-MIAMI
While working for a month here, I had the opportunity to live as a local and explore many of the things that took place on the streets.  I'm not 100% certain at what had happened on scene, but I believe it was either drug or prostitution related.  I was working some paparazzi assignments and on the side I would perform some personal assignments.  This particular opportunity was posed for my night and photojournalism photography.  At the time I was using the Nikon D2X and I wasn't very happy with it's high ISO performance, but to be quite honest the camera did an impressive job!  These shots would have served well for any local newspapers.

South Beach Tranquility

SOUTH BEACH-MIAMI
We were walking along the boardwalk back to our condo when this particular scene caught my eye. It seems to plays with my imagination, potentially leading to anywhere unknown...a very relaxing photo that seems to stimulate the mind.

Feel The Music

TORONTO
Yes, Lenny always feels the music.  Aerosmith and Lenny Kravitz...together on tour...priceless!

As promised...

Ok ok...so some have asked for celeb shots!  With the Toronto International Film Festival almost over, I thought I would commemorate with one of my favorite film festival shots.  This was Johnny Depp at his premiere screening for the movie, Corpse Bride in '05.  I must have yelled repeatedly '21 Jump Street' at least 21 times...and I got his attention!  Johnny was only in town for one evening, as he was busy filming the sequel to Pirates of The Caribbean!

By the way, you don't always need press passes...tenacity goes a long way!

Direct Domain Publishing

To Everyone,

Sorry for any inconveniences over the past couple days, as my blog was down!  I had my service provider allow Google to direct my blogger account to my domain.  So just go to www.joeyimages.com from now on and keep up with your dedicated viewership!

Thanks,
Joey

Shopping at Zellers

Hide-and-seek at Old Navy!

"This kid cracks me up..."  So he just loves department stores, he thinks there just a big maze for children.  It's a great recreational outing for the family and you can wear your children out.  So I highly recommend shopping malls for photo taking, but don't go pissing anyone off.  I think security or mall employees can feel irratable about anyone taking pictures in the mall!

Anyhow it was a fun day with Jackson...we had a blast at the mall.

He Scores!

This one is for you dad!

A new beginning!

This photo is probably the most powerful shot that I have ever taken!  I was still realizing that I was officially a Father and my son had been born into this world.  My Wife was being cared by the doctors, for her incredible performance in giving birth.  And I was just getting to know this new human being that we call Jackson...so this hallmark's my legacy and commitments to him and the photograph's I take of him.  Joey Images is only the beginning...the vault is now open!

j

The short cottage trip!

So this year we all had to turn around after two nights of cottage life...cart all the food, belongings and excitement into 2 two damn mini vans...how depressing.  My Wife's poor grandmother was pretty sick at the hospital and things got tense.  But I ended up walking away with some great snap shots this year...I only regret leaving my camera behind when we made a trip to African Lion Safari, as we were still able to make some local excursions..

j

Going back into the past!

Jackson couldn't walk yet...but the colours shined from his eyes and all around him!  I love this photo.  These were the 'Baby Einstein' days!

Jenna is all smiles and tongue!

A friend at the bank had mentioned that her sister would love it if I took some photo's of her daughter and contribute some photo's to my portfolio, so I took the opportunity and started working on my children's photography, outside of all the other types of photography I was exploring.
I used Fuji 120 film, a Hasselblad 501cm, tripod and a sekonic light meter to measure the ambient lighting periodically.  You may notice that the frame isn't perfectly square(attributed by Hasselblad), as I played around witht the crop tool in Photoshop.  I also want to note that this particular film negative obviously was drum scanned and imported as a digital image, something I still do with all my old negatives!

T.O. on hold for now...

This is my first year to skip the Toronto International Film Festival...in fact not much paparazzi assignments on my plate this year!  I'm focusing on family life and the more passionate side of my photography...found this shot when we went to Casa Loma.  I still love Toronto and I will miss all the excitement.

I added a little logo art, as you can see...just flirting with ideas at the moment...it's more of a watermark...so forget that I said logo!

j

A baby kangaroo!

Special thanks to my Wife's friend, for taking this photo of a Joey on her trip to Australia.

Opening the vault...

These are some sample-photos, from my stock photography vault that I will be launching hopefully next year.  Many of the photo's were taken when I was studying photography at Ryerson.  I was much more passionate then and now I can start sharing the creativity!

j

August was a write-off

Well we had a family emergency to respond to while away at a cottage...I got food-poisoning...missed my niece's first year birthday..picking up all the lost pieces and working with the Miller Group...and the creation of JoeyImages.com.  So my new project is slowly being innovated.
