Bo Duke gives us a smile!

EXCLUSIVE - Jeff Nolan/Joey Images

TORONTO - Well it's been a long time favorite television show to many worldwide. And everybody remembers Bo and Luke Duke from The Dukes of Hazzard. We had one of our photographer's cover today's assignment at The Motion Custom Car Show. John Schneider made a guest appearance with the original Dodge Charger and was also signing autographs. Special thanks going out to the staff at the show for giving us this opportunity to hang out with John and the well admired General Lee!

The Motion Custom Car Show takes place March 27-29 at the Direct Energy Centre. For more information check out www.motioncarshow.com

Canadian Pride

Thanks to Adam Strongman for being the contributing photographer this week. We had the local Whitby Firefighters on scene, showing their support in the latest repatriation ceremony! As you heard, Canada recently lost another 4 brave soldiers in the Afghanistan mission. And thousands more paid tributes to the loss of our fallen heroes; Master Cpl. Scott Vernelli, Cpl. Tyler Crooks - both of November Company, 3rd Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment battle group - Trooper Jack Bouthillier and Trooper Corey Joseph Hayes, of the Royal Canadian Dragoons.

Hopefully the ignorant tyrants from Fox News don't make anymore mockery of the Canadian Afghanistan mission. I heard last night that Greg Gutfeld of Red Eye had been making some ignorant comments about the Canadian military, implying that we are so far from being G.I. Joe's....I got a 'gut' feeling that Greg won't be welcomed in Canada!

You can click on the Fox News link and catch the video clip of the farce on DIGG

Mastermind at heart...

Ira Fisher/JOEY IMAGES

World Pro Yo-Yo champion Rob Kitts was at various Mastermind educational stores this weekend to talk to some youngsters and demonstrate his amazing yo-yo skills.  Apparently Rob can also yo-yo with one in each hand and admitted to having 2 black eyes once.  Thanks to all the photographers who submitted their photos for this media literacy field assignment...too many good ones to post!

Premature Life

I want to thank my friend Tim Jackson in Washington DC, for letting me post the above image of his nephew Mason, who was born 3 months premature back in June of 2008 at the Children's Hospital in Washington DC. The rest of the images on Tim's Flickr account are absolutely remarkable. For some time now, Tim and I have both known each other from various paparazzi assignments etc. Both of us share similar interests when it comes to the Nikon technology and we help each other out with learning resources. Tim has an amazing way of capturing images with his photojournalism skills!

Anyhow I wanted to share one his photos because it inspired me and I thought of how difficult it must be as a fellow parent, to experience the following:

Dear Joey,

So Mason is doing good! I took a few images of him yesterday and I was going to do a whole shoot but he fell asleep in my arms and it was the longest time I have had to spend with him one on one. I just ended up hanging with him, while he was sleeping in my arms most of the time and hanging out with my sister. He has a surgery tomorrow to fix a hernia which is typical with premature babies. Then he's got more tests the following week to make sure he's not having seizures and they will also be checking his hearing and eyesight too. It's alot of waiting and seeing from day to day, which can be very draining on the whole family especially my sister. Thankfully my sister had recently recieved her degree in the field of nursing before this happened, which helps her a lot in understanding all the medical stuff, but it's still overwhelming for anyone to go through. Mason has a feeding tube through his nose into his stomach (which also gives him meds) and an oxygen line. So he's hooked up to wires 24/7 and takes numerous meds throughout the day. With these wires in the early stages, there was the risk of him pulling them out or them getting clogged or fluid getting into his lungs wich all had to be looked out for. If you think a crying newborn can keep you up at night I would say that a silent newborn with special needs is impossible to get sleep with. The wires will all eventually come out but because premi's have the most trouble in developing there lungs its very critical that they are ready and can swallow and that there stomachs can handle it before he gets off them. Mason has also been diagnosed with critical hearing loss which means they think he will most likely be deaf. He is fitted with hearing aids he received last week and may be a likely candidate for coculair implants. Every week a nurse, physical therapist and sign language instructor stops by to visit mason and help out. We are all trying to learn sign language. Its fun, but sad and frustrating at the same time. The worst part of all this is not knowing and really having to wait till Mason is about 2 to 3 years old, in order to tell what all the problems he will have to overcome in the long run growing up. All this said, none of it really matters because Mason is growing into a beautiful strong little man everyday and its a miracle and blessing he's here with us everyday. The pictures really do no justice when looking at the first pics of him, when he was only 3 days old because there's not really any reference to scale, but if you imagine printing one of those at a 4x6 size, it would probably be right and that would put him in the palm of your hand! My sister spent over 180 days in the hospital with him, driving 1 hour and 45 minutes each way, everyday until he was released. The grandmothers also took a lot of shifts with her too. Everyone at that hospital knew Mason and my family by the time he left. Anyways like I said he's doing great now considering all he's been through! We can only take it one day at a time.

Regards,

Tim Jackson, Washington, DC

Air Jackson!

Now that the great weather is around the corner, I'm pretty excited about the location shoots!  The children are excited about being able to play in the parks and just get out of the house.  I took the above image last summer and it amazes me how children develop over time and so quickly into the little people that they are...

A hero comes home

Today's Highway of Heroes procession was dedicated to Canadian Forces soldier Marc Diab, who was recently killed on a mission in Afghanistan.  Sincerest wishes going out to his friends and family.  A small group of RCMP(Left to right: Cst. Delroy Johnson; Cpl. John Baranyi; Cst. Darren McGreal; Cst. Dave Fenchak; Cst. Michael Kerr; Cpl. JP Lee) officers stopped by the Brock St. bridge in Whitby, Ontario to pay respects to the latest fallen soldier.

my little book worm

It seems that my Apple Mac Book has been taken over by my almost 3 year old!  He just loves to look at pictures and hit keys.  The laptop has been a great way to stimulate his visual senses when I'm showing him the pictures I take of him.  It's pretty cute when he asks me for the 'laughing baby' video clip on YouTube he observes it well and starts giggling a long with the laughing baby...it's like it triggers a laughing frenzy.  It's priceless!

My involvement with helping students has also inspired me to help my own child.  We have his camera and laptop around, so the media literacy learning is off to a great start.  So far we haven't really got into any video games and I'm not really big on them at the moment(I do like guitar hero).  Last week the media made a statement on the news, something about kids and video games, how video games are highly addictive as hard drugs.  If you recall, 15 year old Brandon Crisp from Barrie, Ontario was reported missing back in early October last year.  Weeks later his body was found in a wooded area not very far from his home.  The tragic event stemmed from a dispute with his parents over a video game.  I spoke to some parents and the term 'no screens' for grounding has been a successful practice with many.  It simply covers all the basis, influencing a child to direct their attention to something constructive!

I'm not one for censorship, I think awareness is always a strong element in teaching children.  So hopefully more awareness will be brought forward in homes.  A balance is your best safety net, too much of anything is harmful to any young mind!

Just my opinions.

Alma Marguerite (James) Spisak

It is with sadness that I announce the passing of Alma, in her 74th year, on March 4th, 2009.  Beloved wife of John for 56 years.  Loving mother of Edna, Lynn and Eddie.  Cherished grandmother to Brandy, Ryan, Julie, Katie, Sarah and my wife.  Alma left behind many memories, including a wonderful collection of photographs, scrapbooks and diaries.  I was reviewing some photographs and found the above image and decided to make a blog entry with it, because the photo commemorates the love and dedication to her husband.  The photograph depicts a high school sweethearts love story when you look at it, as well as many of the other photographs.  The nostalgia in all of these photos are priceless and are far superior to any of the photographs I have ever taken.  I just love how old photos take us back in time!

Fallen Soldiers

Whitby, Ontario
The Brock Street 401 overpass was the centre of attention today, as another motorcade of fallen soldiers came home.  Hundreds of people came from all over to pay respects and participate in what's becoming to be a very popular attraction.  The Miller Group highway patrollers were on location to conduct a ramp closure for today's funeral procession.  Take a close look at the background on the bottom image(click on it), a beautiful array of Canadian flags were on display.  My eyes gravitated to all the hands that were holding the tiny flags, as shown above.

Special wishes going to all the families of Corporal Dany Olivier Fortin, Corporal Kenneth Chad O'Quinn and Warrant Officer Denis Raymond Brown.

I recently discovered the Aminus3 photo blogging community and met Paul Williams, fellow blogger and photographer.  I fell in love with his shot of this young child sleeping aboard a Cessna light at 2000 feet, above the Gulf Islands in beautiful British Columbia.

Paul utilized ambient light during the digital capture.  He later processed the image with a single step of sharpening in Paint Shop Pro 7.

Nicely done Paul!
